WHAT IF?
Did you know that Americans spend over $450 BILLION dollars at Christmas? That is more than is given to ALL charities in a given year.

What if we spent LESS and GAVE more? What if instead of giving the frivolous gifts and stuff, we cut back and then gave to help others? This year, Wesley will be taking a special sacrificial (sacrificing those frivolous gifts) offering on Christmas Eve. This offering will go to these 3 mission projects:

  • Clean water-to help those in other countries that do not
    have clean water to drink.
  • Local Missions-Our local mission team that helps build wheel chair ramps and other projects
  • International Missions-Our International Mission team that goes to help others in various countries.

This is an opportunity to cut back on our Christmas spending and give more to help others. You could even give a gift in honor or memory of someone.

What would Jesus do? He would give to help others! Let’s do the same this Christmas and make it count for someone else!

Fall Ministry Opportunities

Fall Ministry Opportunities at Wesley UMC in Nederland, Tx

Hurricane Harvey hit a lot of people really hard in realizing that we really need only the essentials.  Unfortunately, people who were hit hard with Harvey do not have the essentials.  Some of our church’s ministries help to address needs in our community.  Here are just a few.

Blankets for Buckner’s Children.

Our Youth, Tweens & Childrens Ministries put together fleece blankets to give to the children at the Beaumont Buckner’s home.  We worship, craft, eat and share these blankets.  It is for those children to keep.  If you would like to contribute a monetary donation, please write a check to Wesley with on the memo Buckner’s Blankets, or pick up an envelope in the church foyer.  Either mail to Wesley UMC, Buckner Blankets, 3515 Helena Avenue, Nederland, Texas 77627.  Or drop off in the offering plate, or the church office.  It takes $20 to make a double thickness blanket.  Any donation is greatly appreciated!  Contact Tween leader (and Education Director), Marilyn Myers at 409-728-6701 for any additional details or our Children’s Ministries Director – Tammy Bell at 409-720-9169.

Trunk or Treat

Each year, Wesley UMC provides a safe setting for your little ones to enjoy trick or treating, with our Trunk or Treat.  Wesley members and other volunteers decorate their cars/trucks and pass out candy for the little ones.  Inside the Christian Life Center, we provide food, games, activities and door prizes.  This will be October 29th from 5 – 7 PM.

We need volunteers, Trunks, and of course extra bags of Candy!  Last year, we estimate that we had over 2,000 community members attend our event!    Please bring your candy donations either to the church foyer, in the Candy Treasure Chest, or bring by the office.  To volunteer, cook, donate, contact our Trunk or Treat Coordinators Jackie Richards, or Tammy Bell  (and Children’s Ministries Director) at 409-720-9169.

Back Pack Buddy Food Ministries

We provide a little extra help for identified families at Helena Elementary and CO Wilson Middle school.  We work with the counselors to bring a back pack filled with food, so that the student/family can bring home on Friday, and bring the back pack the following week.

We need donations of food goods, volunteers to pack up the back packs, volunteers to deliver the back packs.  You can help in any or all areas of our Back Pack Buddy Food Ministry program.  We fill the back packs on Wednesdays at 5:30 PM in Sunday School room Bible 101, in the Christian Life Center. Contact Lisa and Billy Horton in how you can help at 409-540-4585.

Listed below are the specific food items we need for this food ministry.  If you bring something not on the list, don’t worry, we pass the food onto either the United Board of Missions, or the Hospitality House in Port Arthur.  Bring food items and place them into our Back Pack Buddy Cart in the foyer of our church sanctuary or bring to Bible 101 Sunday School Classroom.  If you need for us to pick up the food items, contact, Gail Pickens-Barger at 409-727-3177.

These are just a few ministries where you can help and be an impact to those in our community.

God Bless You.

Wesley Mission Volunteer Group

Wesley Mission Volunteer Group at Wesley UMC in Nederland, Texas

To Methodist Men, Wesley Mission Volunteer group, or anyone wanting to be a part of a small group of volunteers helping with home recovery.

We are trying to get people together to help with home recovery work again. A lot was accomplished in the first few days and we thank the many volunteers that began the process of home recovery, but there is still a lot more to do. We have the tools and we have the supplies, now we need to get the group or groups together that can get things accomplished a little at a time. “The harvest is plenty but the workers are few…” sounds real familiar right now. We’d like to have a meeting of any and all people interested in helping with the work and helping to make decisions with what we can do and when we can do it. The meeting is set for Saturday Sept. 30th, at 9:30am at Wesley UMC-Nederland.

We have many people in our congregation and in our community in severe need of assistance with this slow process and we need to start addressing how we can be of assistance. This is what we are called to do, so if you or anyone you know would be interested in helping with this, please come by and be a part of small journey on a long road to recovery. Being the hands and feet of Jesus is not only necessary, but also very rewarding.

In Christ’s Service,
Garry Richards
